Will You Catch Me If I Fall? by Adonica Shaw is a heartfelt and inspiring millennial memoir that explores one woman’s journey through life’s most difficult trials. In this deeply personal reflection, Adonica confronts the challenges of motherhood, race, spirituality, and complex family dynamics, all while navigating a difficult pregnancy that forces her to redefine her path.

Once a television anchor, and public speaker, Adonica's world changes dramatically when she is diagnosed with preeclampsia in her 30s. This health crisis serves as a turning point, prompting her to step away from the spotlight and embrace new roles as a mother, doula, and midwife. In this period of transformation, she embarks on a profound journey of “remothering” herself, learning how to care for her own emotional and physical needs before she can truly care for others.

To “catch” a baby is to acknowledge that the energy of the mother or birthing person, is the primary birthing force;  and labor, transition, delivery, and the very act of bringing life into the world belong solely to them. It is their triumph, their creation, their effort alone - that facilitates the arrival of the new soul on the Earth’s plane. Midwives have the distinct privilege of assisting and bearing witness to this rite of passage, “catching” both the newborn and the mother in the last moment of pregnancy. It is this sacred distinction between midwives and doctors, which makes us passive and yet integral participants in the pageantry of birth.
